I like Mike Huckabee. He ran a very entertaining and vivacious campaign in the 2008 Presidential election. As a nationally unknown governor, he quickly ignited a large following and quickly rose as a top competitor in the Republican primaries. After the election, he began hosting an excellent show on Fox News that mixed politics and music in a new and fresh way.
But, in the state of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee was already very popular – especially in the prison system. He granted over 1000 pardons and commutations in his ten year tenure. He was also well known by judges and attorneys who questioned the circumstances and relationships that Huckabee had with those given freedom.
The biggest problem facing Huckabee is the repeated crimes of those who benefited from Huckabee’s forgiveness. The most recent hilling of police in cold blood by Maurice Clemmons is a prime example of the Huck-A-Free dilemma. Despite his explanations for each of the cases, it is quite easy to call his decisions into question. Questions cause confusion. Confusion causes disinterest. Disinterest does not produce votes.
The very mention of these situations will cause Huckabee to become defensive during a Presidential Debate. Huckabee can not win being on defense the entire time he is running in 2012. Obama will already be on defense for his incompetent actions. In 2012, America will need a clear choice. America needs an offensive player. Huckabee is no longer able to play that position.
